The epidermis is the most superficial layer of skin. It is composed of closely packed cells called stratified squamous epithelium. The epidermis consists of 5 layers.

The Dermis is attached to the epidermis by way of the basement membrane. It is the deep part of the skin, and contains blood vessels, nerves, glands, and hair. It has 2 layers. It is high in the proteins collagen and elastin.

The hypodermis is technically not part of the skin. It attaches the skin to underlying organs and tissues. It contains adipose tissue which serves insulation.(fat)
